St Martin’s already had the gig, the ‘Dolphin?, then the St Martin’s Gig Club decided a new gig would be welcome to the club. They applied for a lottery grant, and after tedious forms and check-ups, the Lottery Council let them go through with the plans for a new gig. The gig is being completed at the moment by Ralph Bird. The famous Devoran gig-builder took only 4 months, as his standard, to build the new gig. The name, ‘Galatia?, was only decided on Friday, by the St Martin’s Gig Club. They are planning to paint the gig similar to that of the Shah on St Agnes, but with varnished top-plank, darker blue, and, like the Shah, a white keel. They have also been building a new shed for the gig, and came into luck last weekend when a new load of concrete blocks were swept off the quay, into St Martin’s harbour - the owner of the blocks said they may donate it to the club. The new gig should be launched in April. The Morton’s Gig: The Mortons, St Martin’s, who recently were allowed to comission their own independant school on St Martins, called the Little Arthur School, are in the process of building a new gig. The St Martin’s family are hand-building their own gig, to be completed by next rowing season. The governing gig club on the islands, on St Mary’s is quirying the building of the gig, as the Mortons have not asked permission to row in the local races, and have kept quiet about their new gig. St Martin’s Gig Club are keeping out of the Morton’s plans to prevent further tension between St Mary’s and St Martin’s.
