A huge controversy has gripped the Island of Bryher recently in the increasing furore about the plan to extend the Hell Bay Hotel and nearly double it? capacity under the instruction of New owner Robert Dorien Smith. Many islanders are outraged at the proposal saying that it will ruin the unique and unspoilt, rugged feel of Bryher, others argue that it will provide a much needed boost for the Islands economy. Recently a survey showed that 84% of islanders were opposed to the proposal, put foward by Mr Dorien Smith who currently owns the lease to the island of Tresco. Many locals of Bryher believe that the heavy hand of influence from Tresco will bring with it over commercialisation and ultimately, the taking over of Bryher by Mr Dorien Smith. Currently, The Hell Bay hotel has a 14 rooms, if the extension plan goes through this number will increase to 27 rooms. A major battle was won by the group who oppose the plans, as on the 8th of February a decision came in the form of a vote by twelve local council members who voted 3 for the extension to go ahead and 9 against. This result reflects a large majority and will not be easily overturned. Marrion Bennet, a local who is very much opposed to the extension said recently “There’s a long way to go, but it is a step forward.” Robert Dorien Smiths’ team are expected to announce that they will appeal this latest decision to the local planning authority soon.
