With flat calm conditions, this race should have been more about the best gig that the best crews and the usual suspects were up at the top of the list.

The lightest and one of the newest gigs in the Islands, the Tregarthen came first in this race up to St. Agnes but were followed closely by Scillys’ oldest gig, the Bonnet. The order was

Tregarthens-1st Bonnet-2nd Dolphin-3rd Golden Eagle-4th Shah-5th Czar-6th Galatea-7th Nornour-8th Men a Vaur-9th Serica-10th

It is interesting to note that three of Scillys four pre 1900 gigs came in the top five showing that the old craft may still be up there with the best. There was a fantastic scrap between the Dolphin and the Eagle for third place which the dolphin eventually took from the lighter boat by the length of a name. The Nornour did well to get back in to the race after a miserable start.

Most crews stopped off in the Turks Head for an ale ater the race and the pup was full to the rafters all night. The Bonnet crew and the Nornour crew stayed there until kicking out time and didn’t look to well for it when they trundled up to work at 8 in the morning!
