Mark Praeger, 49, former deputy head of Carn Gwaval Primary School and resident of 30-years, has set up what is thought is the Islands first ever brewery.

On interview with Clive Mumford for the Cornishman, Mark said that “according to the Steamship Company, 8,000 to 10,000 casks of beer were imported to the Islands last year. That’s five casks per head of the resident population. I know I?ve done my share, but that’s impressive.”

It is now the most southerly brewery in the United Kingdom.

He imports his grain from Newton Abbot, and his hops from Worcester. ‘Master Brewer? Rob Jones, based in Brighton, helped Mark set everything up. His first commercial beer is ‘Maiden Voyage? produced by the ‘Ales of Scilly Brewery’.

It takes 10 days to make the beer, and the set up at Trenoweth has the capacity to brew six barrels (1700 pints) a week.
