The fire brigade were called out to a fire at Peninnis pines just after 3 o’clock in the afternoon. It is not uncommon for fires to stat in the dry pine woods on St. Marys. Similar fires have previously occured on the Garrisson.
The smoke from this blaze could be seen throughout the Islands but the St. Marys fire brigade managed to bring it under controll. It is thought that the recent spell of prolonged dry weather, hence lack of water in the Peninnis reservoir, has contibuted to this fire.
