The Sikorsky S-61, often described as the workhorse of the Sikorsky fleet, will remain British Internationals’ main helicopter despite rumours that the company was about to splash out on a new 36 seater EH 101.

The company have been plagued by misfortune this year as they have seen one of their helicopters go in for vital repairs at the very start of the busy season. This left the predicament of night flights in order to catch up. This may be one of the reasons why they have opted not to fork out a reputed ?14 mn for the new helicopter.

There was also a scare at the beginning of the season when a fault occurred half way over, the emergency services were put on full alert. All turned out to be well in the end though will the safe arrival of all passengers.

BIH has branches of the corporation in Aberdeen and the Falkland Islands, and the Sikorsky seems to be the flagship. The helicopters, once the choice of the Naval air rescue teams, were mainly built in the 1960’s. Two helicopters are currently running the route, EB (Echo Bravo), also known as the iIsles of Scilly/i, and FJ (Foxtrot Juliet).

The helicopter still seems to be a novel way to travel for some who see it as another important part of that special vacation. This helicopter service is the only scheduled one of its kind in the British Isles.
