Passengers on Wednesdays Scillonian were treated to a rare display by the RNLI as they passed Mousehole and Newlyn. There were two RNLI boats out on practice, the RIB, based at the Penlee station, and the Arun class, based in Newlyn.

Passengers first saw the 40 Knot RIB race past and partake is some daring manouvers such as passing right under the stern of the Islands’ ferry. Onlookers noted the RIBs’ precarious position as it raced over the wake from the Scillonian.

The larger Newlyn lifeboat then joined the display and followed the Scillonian in, towards Penzance for about five minutes. The RIB showed off its agility as it sped around the other lifeboat and the Scillonian. Finally the two boats started to bear away and nipped as close to the Scillonians’ stern as possible leaving passengers waving in appreciation.
