The IOS Wildlife Trust - Official ‘Launch Day? - Thursday 13 September.

The transition of the Isles of Scilly Environmental Trust to a ‘Wildlife Trust? was formally celebrated on Thursday 13 September.

The occasion began with a gathering of invited guests in the Scillonian Club, Hugh Town, St. Mary’s, where, following an initial welcoming address by Andrew Cooper, wildlife film producer and vice-President of the IOSWT, guests heard Dr. Simon Lister, Director General of The Wildlife Trust national body, outline the advantages of affiliation and the importance of the strengthening of wildlife related links with the Islands as a result.

Well known bird enthusiast, environmentalist and TV personality Bill Oddie followed on the proceedings in his usual inimitable style with an amusing reflection on his visits to the Islands over many years and his experiences in observing the wildlife of Scilly. Thereafter, in blustery conditions guest made their way through Hugh Town to the quay, where, joined by a large gathering of enthusiastic visitors and locals alike they witnessed the official opening of the new IOSWT ‘Visitor Centre? by Bill Oddie.

The day continued with a public viewing and open day of the ‘Woolpack Volunteer Centre?, a naval gun battery built in 1910, recently renovated and converted to accommodate individuals undertaking voluntary work for the IOS Wildlife Trust. An accompanying exhibition of the Trust’s work and activities was on display throughout the day, including an on-line preview of the new IOS Wildlife Trust website where individuals can apply for Membership of the Trust and hence support its activities.

Following on, later in the afternoon Will Wagstaff, one of the Islands resident wildlife experts kindly escorted guests and members of the public on a guided tour of the Higher Moors nature trail. Overall, the day proved to be interesting and enjoyable to all who attended.

The IOS Wildlife Trust Visitor Centre situated on St. Mary’s quay is the prime location for the Trust’s interaction with the public, illustrating the Trusts’ activities, booking snorkelling trips and selling goods such as maps, postcards, sweaters, tee-shirts etc.

The Trust is looking for volunteers to allow the facility to be manned continuously during daylight hours during the summer season. Anyone interested should telephone the Trust office on 01720 422153.
