This year, two Island crews will make the trip to Newquay on the North Cornish Coast to represent the Isles of Scilly at Womens gig racing.

The two crews selected to row in the championships are the Bonnet crew and the Serica crew, the two crews who have come out on top, overall of the swap races this season. This selection process means the most addaptable crews will get to row in Newquay in what is likely to be an unfamiliar gig.

The Championships consist of heats in the form of triangle races around Newquay harbour, the event always attracts good crowds. Newquay has long been recognised as the Home of Cornish Pilot Gig racing and although the competition is not held in as high regard as the World Championships in Scilly, it comes a close second.

The Bonnet crew consist of four World Champions and have to fancy their chances of getting to the final; they did after all, win the event last year. The Serica crew have been seen very much as the under dogs from the Islands but they have trained as hard as any crew competing and their practices in the heavier gig ‘Serica’ could stand them in good stead for an impressive finish.
