- Demonstration of the wave heights at the Seven Stones on Sunday afternoon. Scilly only gets waves of this height on exposed rocks and islets. Under no circumstances would such a wave occur inside the harbour.
Tripper boats were left on their moorings this morning after bad weather warnings, and strong winds in the morning. Weather Reports suggested winds on St Mary’s where the third highest in the country, at 54 mph.
Automated weather reports from the Seven Stones lightship between the Islands and Land’s End reported waves of 7.8 metres (25.7 feet) yesterday afternoon.
Despite high winds, no major incidents have occurred - it is Sunday so the Gry Maritha and Scillonian were not schduled to run anyway.
iSeven Stones Lightship has recorded winds of 45.3 m/s (101 mph, Catagory Two Hurricane) at 4 am, Monday; and 53.5 m/s (119 mph, Catagory Three Hurricane) at midday, Sunday. These are undoubtedly anomalies. Nonetheless, conditions must have been wild for weather-measuring instruments to be playing up./i
