Probably the only hope for a non-Caradon crew winning the WPGC?s this year is the Idas crew, who this year will race in Penryn’s ‘Irene? in preference to their ?own? gig. On Friday, the Idas crew in their usual gig came first place, way ahead of Caradon’s older Ann Glanville as the Mary Newman did not race. Today, in the St Agnes race, the Irene came high up the placings, and in the first heat race they won comfortably.
Scillonian followers will be proud to know there is a Scilly representative in the Irene, Nathan Woodcock. Falmouth and Scilly supporters, in fact, most non-Caradon supporters, are willing the Irene to become this year’s new champions.
As the sun rose on the Championship Sunday, the Mary Newman sat proudly alongside her newer rival, the Irene. Surely the winning crew will come from either Caradon or Falmouth, but with the Minnadhu crew putting in consistently strong performances, no one could wish for a tighter final.
