TV: ‘Island Life?

Point of View Productions has shown it’s first two programmes on Carlton Westcountry about “Island Life”. Mike and Emma Rowe produced the programme last year. Bryony Duncan, Mike Nelhams, Andrew and Hilary, John Bird, Charlie Bennett are the key Islanders in the programme. They are shown on Thursdays at 7:30 pm.

TV: “Atlantic Britain”

Keo Films has also produced a programme entitled “Atlantic Britain”. In the programme, journalist Adam Nicholson sails the Irene May, a 20-ton ketch, down the west coast of Britain and Ireland. He calls in at the more remote communities, including the Isles of Scilly. He looks at the occuptions of the Islanders, and the archaeology and geology of the Islands. Mark Groves helps on below-water exploration. The series is due to be screened nationally on Channel 4 from January.

Ferrying Meeting

After an ?encouraging? meeting between the Council and Government, it looks hopeful that there will be an multi-million poundinvestment in port and ferry facilities between the Islands and Penzance. The meeting was between members of the Council, including Chairman Dudley Mumford and Chief Planning Officer Don Nicholas-McKee; members of the Steamship company, including Chief Executive Jeff Marston; MP Andrew George and Transport Ministry Minister David Jamieson.

Bryher Boat Services Increases It’s Fleet

A Kiwi RIB, powered with a Scania 483hp water jet, has been bought by Bryher Boat Services to carry up to 12 passengers per time at about 30 knots.

Sunday’s Marathon

118 people are entered into the Tresco marathon, to be run on Sunday 13 April. In 1992 Steve Edwards broke the world record, running 87 marathons, and he will be joining the competitors for his three-hundred-and-seventieth marathon. As usual, money raised will go to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

‘Pleasure Boats’ With New Live Together

Past member boats of the St Mary’s Boatmen’s Association: the Buccaneer, Kingsley and Black Swan have been bought by Cornwall Ferries to be used at the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth as a ?park-and-ride? facility.

Award for New Duchy Man

Colin Sturmer, the Isles of Scilly Dutchy of Cornwall Land Steward, has been awarded the Royal Golden Jubilee Medal for services to the community. Previously working as a member of the Dartmoor Rescue Group in Devon for 32 years, Mr Sturmer replaces Jeremy Pontin. Mr Pontin retired.

SAT Exams Delivered to Papershop

Exams to be taken by pupils 14-year-old pupils of the Five Islands’ School were delivered to Mumford’s, the newsagents in Hugh Town. Addressed to Mrs Mumford, the box was taken by maintenance staff to the school – where they should have been delivered. The package was ironically dated 1 April. According to the Cornishman, for which newsagent Clive Mumford writes: “A spokeswoman from the Enquiry Team of the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) … confirmed the contents were Key Stage exams papers … and said ‘Something like this goes missing every year. I?ve just no idea how it happened.?”

Trouble from Spanish Fishermen

iGorrochategui and Madinabeitia/i, a Spanish fishing company, has been ordered to pay a ?1500 fine and ?1,731 costs for fishing illegally. Their long-liner Mountain Peak (Brixham registered, Spanish crew) was caught last year within the Isles of Scilly limits. The limits were set in a local by-law in 1998. Marine Officer Steve Watt brought the prosecution.
