The Isles of Scilly has got itself a new ambulance that is one of a kind in the UK.
The ?260,000 catamaran called Star of Life can travel up to 25 knots and will be based on the main island of St Mary’s.
The previous ambulance boat, Santa Warna, only travelled at eight knots and has been out of service for the past 18 months.
The new boat will make a great deal of difference to the off islands.
The Secretary of the Community Health Council for the islands, Marian Bennett, told Scilly News, ‘This is a major step towards reassuring off islanders that in an emergency there is a fully equipped and staffed ambulance that can get to them quickly.?
The vessel will also be able to make trips to the mainland when needed. The ambulance will be manned by an ambulance technician and a coxwain.
