The Audit Commission has revealed that ?fundamental flaws’ in the way that Whitehall hands out its money is the reason for record council tax rises.

The Isles of Scilly had one of the highest council tax rises in the country. The islands were subjected to a 25% increase this year. Back in May 300 islanders signed a petition against the council tax rises.

The spending watchdog says that the government and regulators put ?unusual costs’ on local councils.

But they also said that local councils don’t try hard enough to save money instead of raising the burden of the taxpayer.

The Isles of Scilly Council may be taking this on board. This month’s Lighthouse newsletter reveals that the council are looking at ways they can reduce their expenditure.
