The investigation into the plane crash which saw three former Royal Navy pilots rescued has proved inconclusive.

The forced landing happened in October 2002. Bernard Maslin,79, Denis Stanley, 82 and Arthur Record also 82, where on their way to the isles of Scilly from Lands End when their light aircraft crashed into the sea from 2,000ft just six miles off the islands.

Luckily for the men a Newlyn fishing boat was close by and saw what happened. The three men were saved by the fishermen and then airlifted by Culdrose to Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro.

The Air Accident Investigation Branch says “All the aircraft had ample fuel for the flight and none of the other aircraft, flying at a similar level, reported any other significant carburetor icing.”

The men were not injured.
