The low turnout of voters for Thursday’s by-election has raised questions about the contraversy over the electoral role.

Council officials had said the amount of people turning up to vote was surprising due to the weather conditions.

But the electoral role problem also seems to have contributed to the low turnout.

Three hundred islanders were left off the electoral role after registering last October.

These revelations first came to light when both candidates asked people to sign their nomination papers.

Chairman of the Council, Cllr Dudley Mumford has promised a full inquiry into the matter.

And it is rumoured that at least one person is contemplating complaining to the Local Government Ombudsman.

This was the first contested local election on the Islands since 2001.
