A St Mary’s boatman has saved a woman from drowning in a Cornish harbour.

Jeremy Phillips dived into the sea to rescue a woman after he heard her cries for help in Penzance harbour. His wife and three younger daughters rang the emergency services with their telephone. The woman was taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro, suffering from hypothermia and water immersion.

Jeremy told a local newspaper “Her head went under and I didn’t have much choice, it was either stand there and watch her drown or go and help her.”

Mr Phillips were left cold but unhurt. The water at this time of year is around seven degrees centigrade.

It has not been revealed yet how the woman ended up in the harbour.
