A sick man has been rescued 207 miles south west of the Isles of Scilly. A Royal Navy helicopter from Culdrose in Cornwall took part in the six-hour rescue operation after a mayday message from the yacht.

The Silent Annie sent out the message that was picked up by a Government fisheries research vessel and it rescued the ill man in one of its inflatable boats.

The Royal Navy Sea King helicopter from the search and rescue base at Culdrose in Helston then picked up the man. The helicopters cannot usually fly out that far but by refuelling on the islands and taking advantage of specific winds at 4000 ft they were able to do the journey safely. Although another helicopter was on hand in case anything went wrong.

The man, who was suffering from chest pains, was taken to Treliske Hospital where he is said to be in a stable condition.
