A Cornish windowcleaner has won the 2004 Tresco marathon.

Ronnie James from Penzance came in half an hour before any other competitors. Chris Handrew, a spectator, told Scilly News: “It was amazing. He seemed to keep a constant speed up through the race.”

Ronnie told Scilly News: “The hills were the worst. They were tough going but I hope to come back again another year and do even better.”

Ronnie will be running in the London marathon next year.

Helen Pearce, from St Mary’s was the first islander in. She came in 3 hours and 35 minutes.

Roz Hicks, last years first islander, came in just after at 3 hours and 47 seconds.

The weather was one of the biggest hurdles the runners had to race. Just seconds after the race began a hail hit Tresco showering the runners in ice. Marathon Organiser Richard Hobbs sayed positive: “The weather isn’t actually as bad for the runner as it seems. The best temperature is about 12?c and the rain helps to keep them cool.”

The Marathon is run for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Audrey Williams the South west spokeswoman told Scilly News: “It is a fantastic event and the whole of the Tresco community gets involved. We are very happy to be a part of the event.”
