Scilly’s MP Andrew George has highlighted the problems suffered by the 5.1m people who have in asthma in the UK. He will host a special reception at Westminster on Tuesday evening to mark World Asthma Day.
Mr George will be joined by asthma sufferers and medical specialists as well as MPs from all parties.
The reception will be used to launch the Asthma Attack Card, which explains the simple steps people need to take to deal with an asthma attack, and Asthma UK’s ‘Living on a Knife Edge’ report which highlights the problems suffered by those with severe asthma symptoms.
Mr George, who has also tabled a Commons motion drawing attention to the issue, told Scilly News: “Sadly, one person dies from asthma every seven hours in the UK. Over half a million people have severe symptoms and there are still no medicines to adequately control their condition. The Department of Health must give a higher priority to asthma to end this suffering.
“I welcome the launch of Asthma UK’s report today and their new Asthma Attack Card, which will be a great help to the friends, family and colleagues of asthma sufferers. I hope many unnecessary deaths can be prevented and that the Asthma UK message gets through.”
