Scilly’s tourism chiefs have won two national tourism awards at the annual British Resorts Association conference. The islands scooped Best tourism brochure cover and design and Best tourism website front page design and layout at the conference, which took place in Newquay last week.

A panel of experts made up of media directors and tourism managers decided on the awards.

Sixty British resorts were competing including the Isle of Wight, Bournemouth, Eastbourne, Great Yarmouth, Blackpool, West Cornwall, Newquay and Brighton.

The Isles of Scilly won 2nd prize in the website category. Richard Wilcox, Tourism Manager for the Islands told Scilly News: “ I’m delighted to receive this award for Scilly. Our website, www.simplyscilly.co.uk has only recently been redeveloped as part of our tourism marketing strategy so to be acknowledged so soon is a lovely surprise. We were up against much larger resorts with more established websites but to be given recognition by fellow tourism professionals is extremely satisfying. The development of the website doesn’t stop here however, it is very much a work in progress and we have lots of exciting initiatives planned over the next 18 months.”

The websites were judged upon look and feel of the sites, ease of getting around to various sections, creative use of imagery and whether the site reflected well on the destination. The winner was Blackpool and 3rd place was the Isle of Wight. There was further good news for the South West region as West Cornwall scooped top prize for their 2004 brochure.
