Mark Pender is 35 years old and is married with four children. He lives on St. Martins but was born on Tresco.
He is a full time fisherman whose family have been fishing on Scilly for generations. Mark’s owned his own boat the “William and Molly” since 1992 and is deeply committed to fishing and fish conservation through his role as honorary Sea Fisheries Officer.
Mark is Chairman of the Isles of Scilly Fishermen’s Association and has led the successful Objective One Funding application for a new ice-room facility on St Mary’s quay.
He has recently started a new business because of his awareness that trades must evolve as well as the ever decreasing fish prices from the wholesale merchant. His new website, www.scillyshellfish.co.uk, only started in July. The mail order website is enables Mark to send 100 boxes a month to the mainland.
But Mark is also involved with the social side of Scilly. As well as coxing the St. Martins Ladies A Team in the Dolphin he also plays cricket and enjoys reading.
He says he loves “everything” about Scilly but especially the “beauty of the natural environment, the freedom and social interaction.” But he thinks that the “cost of travel and freight to mainland” are the worst things.
