St Mary’s Play Park project has won a ?50,000 Lottery Fund windfall.
Thousands voted by phone, text and online to ensure that the Scilly project beat rival Sutton Court Play Association in Plymouth for the much-needed grant, one of just two given out this year as part of ITV?s 50th birthday celebrations.
Both schemes made their pitch on Monday’s Westcountry Live ITV People’s Millions programme ? and the following morning, presenter Richard Bath and crew were at the Scillonian Club to present the oversized cheque to Committee members Vicky Hitchens and Laura Jenkins.
The scheme has been fundraising for three and a half years and had so far raised ?31,000 of a required ?75-80,000. Thanks to today’s windfall, it is now expected to be up and swinging by next Spring.
‘We never believed it would actually happen,? said Laura. ‘We’d like to say a really big thank you to everyone who voted for us.?
The grants are part of the People’s Millions, a three-year initiative to help ?to improve the quality of life of local communities through transforming the local environment-buildings, amenities, public and green spaces, and the natural environment.? (ITV.com)
