The glamour of the recent Oscars may have captivated the world, but an Isles of Scilly Hotel will be a star attraction at another oscar ceremony next month.

The Hell Bay Hotel on Bryher has been shortlisted for best small hotel at the Tourism ‘Oscars.?

It is one of four attractions from the WestCountry to make the nominations for VisitBritain’s Enjoy England Awards for Excellence.

Hell Bay General Manager Phillip Callan said staff were hoping to follow on their success of winning the small hotel category in the South West Tourism awards.

“If we won the national award, that’s when the really hard work starts. People would come with expectations, and it would be our job to rise to the challenge of living up to that,” he told a WestCountry newspaper.

Malcolm Bell, head of South West Tourism, said: “I’m pleased that the shortlist shows the best of what we have got to offer in the South West.”

He told the same newspaper that the awards generated massive competition, as a large percentage of Britain’s 180,000 tourism businesses had put themselves forward.

He added: “This shortlist reflects the burgeoning preference for something unique. It shows people are avoiding chains and going for something a little different, but top quality.”

The results will be revealed on April 23 at a ceremony at Madame Tussauds in London.
