The Manager of Tresco’s Island Hotel has hit back at the Daily Telegraph after a critical mauling over the weekend ? and says he will change nothing as a result of the article.

The newspaper printed a scathing attack on the catering experience at both the Island Hotel and New Inn by journalist Jan Moir, who stayed on Tresco for two days in February.

“We are taking up the article with the management of the Telegraph,? Euan Rodger told ScillyNews. ‘We believe it to be fictitious at best, and certainly doesn’t come close to the truth concerning her stay here.?

‘We stand by our own product and will continue to do so. The bone is irrelevant. We are highly rated by all hotel guides and we have a 70% return ratio of guests. We are writing to the Telegraph to gain some understanding of what Miss Moir was writing about.?

He blasted the article as ?not fair, not balanced, far removed from reality and not a good critique? ? and denied that there had been a rush of cancellations as a result.

‘We haven’t received cancellations, we’ve had a lot of calls from concerned customers who have reservations and as many or more offering support. I have been sent copies of very annoyed letters written to the Telegraph by previous guests who are aghast that such a reputable newspaper should write this. Several supportive local Islanders have also written in disgust.?

Rodger pointed out that local people had dined at the Hotel at the same time as Moir and ?their recollection of the evening is on different planets. Even on the worst day in the world, we wouldn’t come close to that, although obviously none of us is perfect.?

And he warned: ‘We have to look at the wider picture. An article like this is damaging to the whole of Isles of Scilly tourism.?
