One of the most advanced ships in the Royal Navy, HMS Iron Duke, will be visiting the Islands over the weekend of the 10th and 11th of June, the Council reports.
The Royal Navy Type 23 Frigate, the third ship to bear the Iron Duke name, was launched on 2 March 1991 and commisioned in 1993.
She carries weapons and sensors including Harpoon Anti-Ship Missiles, Stingray Torpedoes, Vertical Launch Sea Wolf Anti-Air Missiles and a 4.5” Mk 8 gun for shore bombardment, as well as an Mk 8 Lynx Helicopter.
The Ship’s Company consists of 17 Officers, 57 Senior Ratings and 111 Junior Ratings.
The second HMS Iron Duke was the first British battleship to be fitted with anti-aircraft guns in 1914 and was present at the Battle of Jutland in 1916.
It is hoped that there will be an opportunity to look over the ship on Sunday 11th.
