The Isles of Scilly will switch over to digital television in the third quarter of 2009, it has been announced.

The Redruth mast, serving west Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, will switch over between June and September 2009, along with transmitters for North Devon and Plymouth.

Exeter is to be the first city in the UK to switch entirely to digital television.

Anyone without a digital TV or set-top box will be unable to receive television channels when the analogue signal is switched off but almost everyone will be able to receive digital TV via freeview, satellite and cable.

The UK switchover is due to start in the Borders TV region in 2008, followed by the West Country, Wales and Granada in 2009. The Channel Islands will not convert until 2013.
