The future of Newquay Airport has been secured with an £11 million grant.

The money, from the EU’s Objective One scheme, will be spent on improving facilities when the RAF leaves the adjacent St Mawgan base in November.

Cornwall County Council, the airport’s owner, is hoping to buy the RAF site from the Ministry of Defence.

Newquay is the closest international airport to the Islands and is used by Skybus.

It was awarded an £8 million grant from the South West Regional Development Agency in December.

The cash is being used to maintain the airport and develop regional services, including links to Scilly and London.

The County Council aims to double the number of passengers (currently 400,000) passing through the airport.
