Scilly’s council has received an offer of funding for a new Five Islands school building on St Mary’s.

The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) has offered between five and nine million pounds conditional on the scheme put forward.

Councillors will vote on whether to accept the funding at a Special meeting on Thursday February 8.

The specification will be sent out for consultation.

The offer is conditional on the new building being completed by 2010, the council reports.

Chief Executive and Director of Children’s Services Philip Hygate said: “This opportunity will secure the future of the Five Islands School and safeguard the very high levels of achievement of our children.

“It is also anticipated that the new build will increase opportunities for broadening the curriculum.?
