Students at the Five Islands Secondary school have elected an MP to represent them in the UK?s Youth Parliament.

The successful candidate has been announced as 15-year-old Alexander Hygate, from St Mary’s.

13-year-old Catherine Moore will deputise and assist in his duties.

Alexander and Catherine were presented with a certificate of their Term of Office by Scilly’s MP Andrew George during a visit to the Five Islands School on Wednesday 14 February.

The St Ives Liberal Democrat MP also spoke to the Student Council and headed an assembly at the school.

The successful pair will attend a residential weekend in Newquay next month to participate in workshops to help them learn about their new roles and to meet other Youth MPs from around the South West.

“Alex and Catherine will serve for a one year term and it is hoped they will lead the way for future budding politicians,” said Helen McGuinness, Acting Early Years and Youth Officer for the Islands’ Council.

The UK Youth Parliament was launched at the House of Commons in July 1999. There are currently over 500 elected MYPs and deputy MYPs throughout the UK.

Helen said: ‘Being an MYP is an exciting opportunity. Responsibilities include meeting with local MPs and Councillors, organising events, running campaigns, holding debates and most importantly, ensuring that young people are listened to by decision makers.

‘The Council’s Youth Opportunity Fund will enable financial support to attend meetings and the school has been hugely helpful throughout the election campaign process, which saw an amazing 88% turn out.?
