The council’s Chief Planning Officer has recommended that planning permission for a new serviced campsite at Peninnis Farm be refused.

The revised proposal from farmer Jon May will be discussed at a planning meeting on February 8.

But the report on the application by CPO Craig Dryden recommends that permission be refused on the grounds that the development would not demonstrably improve the quality of existing tourist accommodation or potentially extend the length of the tourist season.

The proposal would have an adverse impact on the immediate and wider area and would lead to an increased burden on the council’s waste and incinerator capacity, Mr Dryden said.

He also considered that it may not be possible to ensure an adequate supply of water would be available to serve the campsite.

And he was uncertain whether any increase in traffic caused by the site would result in conflict with pedestrians and cars on King Edward’s Lane, over which there are established rights of way.

The planning meeting will be webcast and shown on a big screen in the town hall.

Members refused the original application in February 2006.
